- Grace Dreischmeier (Highland High School) Grace and the Cardinals won a regional championship last week thanks to some stellar pitching from Grace. She got the ball in her teams first playoff game on Tuesday night against Argyle. Grace pitched 5 innings giving up just 2 hits and 1 run while striking out 7. She also went 1-3 at the plate with a run scored and a walk to help the Cardinals beat Argyle 11-1 in 5 innings. Then on Thursday in the regional championship game the Cardinals faced Pecatonica. Grace was near perfect inside the circle. She threw a no hitter, going 5 innings, only giving up 2 walks, and striking out 8 batters. She added a couple RBI’s at the plate going 1-2 with a two runs scored as well. Highland defeated Pecatonica 10-0 in 5 innings.
2. Semaj Venson ( Lancaster High School) Semaj qualified for the state meet in all 4 events he participated in at sectionals last week. He qualified in the 100m, 4X100m Relay, 4X200m Relay, and the Long Jump. In the 100m he finished in 4th place with a time of 11.39 seconds. Then in the 4X100 Semaj, Quinton Ploessl, Peyton Hale, and Max Bedward ran a time of 43.68 to finish in 1st place. That same group proved once again this year why they are one of the best relay teams in the state by winning the 4X200m Relay as well with a time of 1:29.84. Semaj finished up his perfect day with a 2nd place finish in the long jump (21ft).
3. Lauren Wiitanen (Riverdale High School) Lauren qualified for the state track meet in 3 different events at sectionals on Thursday night. The first event she qualified for was the 100m dash finishing in 2nd place with a time of 12.56 seconds. Then in the 200m she was seeded 4th going into finals with 5 girls within a second of each other competing for the top 4 spots. Lauren ran even faster in the finals and ended up in 3rd with a time of 26.26 seconds. Lauren qualified in her 3rd event with the help of some of her teammates in the 4X200m Relay. Lauren, Morgan Wiitanen, Kourtnie McCorkle, and Alyssa Husker ran a 3rd place time of 1:48.04 to qualify for the State meet later this week.
