Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital held a groundbreaking ceremony earlier this week to celebrate the beginning of construction of a new hospital facility on the south side of Prairie du Chien.
The groundbreaking was meant to be a small ceremony, but nearly 200 people showed up.
That was hospital baord president Paul Ginkel and vice president Charlie Connell.
The current hospital is now 55 years old and exists on 7 acres of land and is bordered on all four sides by streets and houses. Limited space has caused the need to lease parking from the school and use the adjacent church parking lot as an emergency helipad.
Several years ago, the hospital board a feasibility study done to see if the current hospital could be fixed up to utilize state of the art equipment.
The new hospital building will feture enhanced emergency services, private patient suites, advanced communication systems, state-of-the-art surgery department, and more.
