Crossing Rivers Health Earns CMS Five-Star Quality Rating for 2023

Prairie du Chien, WI – Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien has again earned the prestigious five-star designation for The Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the highest rating a hospital can achieve. Crossing Rivers Health is one of 50 Critical Access Hospitals in the country and one of eight Wisconsin Critical Access Hospitals to earn the recognition of a five-star rating.

CMS’s star rating system, which began in July 2016, is updated annually. For 2023, the overall rating is based on 46 quality measurements in five categories: mortality, safety, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. Crossing Rivers Health met or exceeded the national benchmark in all five categories.

“Outstanding result on the quality of care provided…” said Christopher Brophy, Crossing Rivers Health Chief Executive Officer. Brophy added, “This recognition is a direct reflection of the dedication and commitment of our entire team. We are proud to provide our patients with the highest level of quality care. The staff at Crossing Rivers Health are truly an amazing group of people who deeply care for the residents of our communities.”

According to CMS, the purpose of the Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating is to summarize quality measure information reported on the Care Compare website in a way that is accessible and easy to understand for patients and consumers. Each hospital has a star rating that ranges from one to five stars, with five stars signifying the highest quality. Anyone can go to medicare.gov/care-compare and search for a specific hospital by name, zip code, or town/state and compare quality and patient perception ratings of up to three hospitals at a time.

Nationwide, 483 hospitals received a five-star rating from CMS, 803 received four stars, 872 received three stars, 668 received two stars, and 250 received one star.
