Wisconsin DNR Boating Safety Course

Young people of the Prairie du Chien area who are interested in recreational boating are invited to attend a Wisconsin DNR Boating Safety Course to be held in late June. Classes will be held on Saturday June 24 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and June 26 and 27 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department in Prairie du Chien.

Registration for the 20 student class will be conducted by placing a phone reservation before June 17 with Dennis Kirschbaum at 608-326-2718. It is strongly suggested that reservations be made before May 31 so the provided workbooks can be delivered through the schools. All homework from the workbook must be completed before the first day of class. A waiting list will be established for additional classes if needed.

Students should go to GoWild.wi.gov where they can set up an account and get a DNR number before class if they do not already have one. Cost of the course is $10.

Volunteer DNR certified Boating Safety Instructors will conduct the course.

Students who enroll must be 12 years of age by January 1, 2024. There is no maximum age. Most states, including Wisconsin, have a minimum age requirement for boat operators. Anyone born after January 1, 1986 is required to be boating safety certified in order to operate a motorboat in the State of Wisconsin. If you have not taken a course and want to operate a motorboat under the requirements of the law this may be the time for you to take the class.

The course will deal with the disciplines of boat safety to include boating laws, safety on the water, types of watercraft and equipment, navigational aids and responsibilities of boaters. If you would like to know more about boating safety this is the course for you.

For additional information please contact Dennis Kirschbaum at 326-2718.
