On November 6, 2023 at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a crash at the south intersection of Cty A at Cty D.
Eugene Schriefer, age 86 of rural Dodgeville, was eastbound on Cty A west of Cty D in his 2016 BMW X3. Eugene did not slow for the “T” intersection and crashed into the embankment on the east side of Cty D. The SUV traveled several hundred feet into the cornfield before it came to rest. There were two passengers in the SUV at the time of the crash, Lorraine Schriefer, age 84 of Dodgeville and Dona Toay, age 76 of Mineral Point. Possible minor injuries were reported for both passengers.
Platteville Fire and Southwest Health EMS removed Eugene from the SUV. Eugene was transported to Southwest Health Center via ambulance. The following day Eugene passed away. It is still being investigated as to the actual cause of death, as there may have been a medical issue with Eugene just prior to the crash.
All three occupants of the SUV were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Platteville Fire, Southwest Health EMS, and Bill’s Body Shop of Fennimore.
