McGregor Construction Project Starts Monday

On Monday, April 3rd, the Main Street construction project in McGregor will begin. Main Street will be completely closed from A Street to the former Fish & Wildlife Center between towns. There will be no access to the City of McGregor from Marquette using Hwy 76 along the river between towns, and a detour will be set up for Phase 1 of construction. Traffic from the north will be routed out of Marquette using Business Highway 18/76 down the “White Springs” hill into McGregor.  From there, Main Street will be open to most of the downtown business district for the next few months.

Beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 2nd through the end of the day Monday, April 3rd, there will be ‘no parking’ on Main Street from A Street to the former River View restaurant, which includes in front of Triangle Park on the Main Street side of the road.  Additionally, there will be ‘no parking’ on both sides of A Street from the intersection of Main & A Streets up 50′ towards the storm sewer.
Moving forward, there will continue to be ‘no parking’ on the north side of Main Street from the intersection of Main and A Streets to the former River View restaurant, as well as ‘no parking’ on the Main Street side of Triangle Park.
When the construction crew arrives in McGregor Monday morning, they will begin installing traffic signage and barricades to start the closure.  For safety purposes, they will also begin erecting chain link fencing just inside the hand railings on both sides of Main Street from Third Street all the way down to the railroad tracks.  Where there are currently accessibility points in the hand railings for stairs and the handicap ramps, the construction crew will create accessibility points in the safety fencing as well.

During the last couple of weeks, sanitary sewer was installed on Front Street (alley between Kwik Star and Backwoods) up to the intersection of Main Street, and the utility trench was backfilled and an aggregate surface was graded to serve as the temporary surface until it is paved in the late summer or early fall. On Monday, April 3rd, and Tuesday, April 4th, the new sanitary sewer will be extended into Main Street so there will be no motorist access to Kwik Star or Twin Cities for a few days. Kwik Star will still be open and there will be pedestrian access.  (Click here to see the map for pedestrian access to Kwik Star on Monday and Tuesday.)  Motorist traffic to Kwik Star and Twin Cities is expected to resume Wednesday.  When this occurs, traffic to Kwik Star and Twin Cities will be routed through the First Street parking lot and onto Front Street (alley between Backwoods and Kwik Star).  There will be signage in place to help guide motorists.  Click here to see a map of the route as well.

While McGregor’s Main Street will be under road construction for the next several months, contractors are working with the City of McGregor and the downtown businesses to provide as much accessibility to the businesses as possible. Our businesses will be open. Nearby parking and pedestrian access will be available to most businesses, most of the time. The downtown businesses appreciate your continued patronage and support during this time. The McGregor-Marquette Chamber and other businesses and organizations are continuing to provide a great lineup of events and activities this year, starting with an impressive lineup this spring! Please watch their social media pages for more information. We look forward to seeing you in McGregor!
