Traffic Incidents in Grant County

On December 28th at approximately 8:07 am, the Sheriff’s Office was notified of a truck in the ditch along Highway 81 just north of County
Road U in Beetown Township. After investigation, it was found that Spencer Meyer-Steiger, age 19 of Bloomington, was operating his 2002
Chevy Silverado eastbound on Highway 81. Spencer went to negotiate a slight left-hand corner and began to slide on the snow-covered
roadway. The truck then struck the curb on the east side of the highway and traveled down a concrete culvert and into a drainage ditch. The
truck struck some large rocks in the ditch and came to rest. Spencer was wearing his seatbelt and was uninjured in the crash. The vehicle sustained moderate damage and was removed by private party. The responding Deputy observed both front tires on Spencer’s truck to be nearly completely smooth with no tread. The bald tires on the truck were a main contributing factor to the crash. Spencer was cited for Vehicle Tires with less than 2/32 inch tread and issued a warning for Failure to Notify Police of an Accident.

On 12/28/23, at approximately 8:25 a.m., The Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle rollover crash on Highway 18 near
Hicklin Hollow Road in Patch Grove Township. After a brief investigation it was determined that Elver Tlehauctle, 17, of Fennimore, was traveling East on Highway 18 in his 2011 Ford F150 when he lost control of the vehicle due to the road conditions. Elver attempted to correct the vehicles path but was unable to and the vehicle crossed the center line into oncoming traffic before it entered the ditch on the north side of Highway 18 when it rolled approximately 1.5 times and came to rest on its top. Elver and a passenger, Lourdes Rodriguez, age 34 of Fennimore, were initially trapped in the vehicle, but were removed by members of Bloomington Fire, Mount Hope Fire, and West Grant EMS. Elver and Rodriguez reported no injuries and denied medical help on the scene. Assisting at the scene were Bloomington Fire, Mount Hope Fire, and West Grant EMS. The vehicle was removed from the scene by B&M Auto Repair out of Bloomington. Elver was cited for Operating without a Valid Driver’s License.

On December 28, 2023, at approximately 9:07 am the Grant County Sheriff’s Office investigated a report of a one-vehicle roll-over crash on
Hwy 61 near Hickory Ln is located in the Township of Paris just outside the Village of Dickeyville. Melbria Heard, age 32 from Moline, IL, was traveling southbound on Hwy 61 in her 2002 Chevy Avalanche. Due to the snow-covered roadway, Heard lost control of her vehicle and left the roadway on the right (west) side of the road. The vehicle rolled once while striking the Dickeyville Population sign. Heard sustained minor injuries in the crash but was not transported by EMS. Heard was wearing her seatbelt. It was discovered Heard did not have insurance on the vehicle and was cited accordingly. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Dickeyville Fire and EMS, Dickeyville Police, and Donnie’s Tire and Tow of Dickeyville.

On December 28, 2023 at approximately 9:13am the Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two vehicle crash on Hwy 151
southbound just south of Exit 1 located in the Township of Jamestown. Xanah Knoblich, age 20 from Cuba City, was traveling southbound on Hwy 151 in her 2014 Chevy Sonic. At that same time Vance Koehler, age 43 from Scales Mound, IL, was entering Hwy 151 on the Exit 1 southbound on ramp in his 2022 Ford F150. Knoblich recognized that Koehler was entering the highway and merged into the left lane to allow him room. However, the left lane of Hwy 151 was covered in snow and slush. As soon as Knoblich’s vehicle entered the left lane it began to spin clockwise into the right lane. The front passenger’s side of Knoblich’s vehicle struck the rear driver’s side of the trailer Koehler was hauling. Knoblich’s vehicle continued to spin clockwise striking Koehler’s trailer a second time with the rear driver’s side of her vehicle. No one was injured in the crash. All individuals were wearing seatbelts. There were some minor damages to the front and rear driver’s side of Knoblich’s vehicle and the driver’s side of Koehler’s trailer. Both vehicles were removed by the drivers. No citations were issued. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Jamestown Fire Department.

On December 28, 2023 at approximately 9:48am the Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one vehicle crash on Sandy
Hook Rd near Leibfried Ln located in the Township of Jamestown. Benjamin Saylor, age 20 from rural Hazel Green, was traveling eastbound on Sandy Hook Rd in his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Due to snow and slush covered roads Saylor lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway on the south side traveling through a fence line. Saylor was wearing his seat belt and was not injured in the crash. The vehicle sustained minor front end damages and was driven from the scene.

On December 28, 2023 at approximately 11:09am the Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one vehicle crash on
Shoestring Rd near Line Rd located in the Township of Paris. Catalino Hernandez-Sosa, age 31 from rural Cuba City was driving northbound on Shoestring Rd in his 2007 Toyota Camry when he lost control on the snow covered roadway. Hernandez-Sosa left the roadway on the west side of the road and took out several feet of wooden fencing. Hernandez-Sosa was not injured in the crash but there was severe damages to the front of his vehicle. Hernandez-Sosa was cited for operating with no insurance and operating without a valid driver’s license. Hernandez-Sosa was issued a warning for hit and run property adjacent to a highway.

On December 30th, at approximately 8:12am the Sheriff’s Office was notified of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 80 at the intersection with
Model Road in Hazel Green Township. After investigation, it was found that Kristi Bellmann, age 49 of Cuba City, was stopped at the stop sign on Roaster Road at the intersection with Highway 80. Bellmann was operating a 2008 Chevy Silverado and intended to cross the intersection and continue westbound on Model Road. Leland Felderman, age 56 of Benton, was operating his 2015 Ram 2500 southbound on Highway 80. Bellman stated she looked, but did not see the southbound Ram due to fog in the area. Bellman proceeded into the intersection and into the path of Felderman’s vehicle. The Ram 2500 had a snow plow attached to the front and the plow collided with the passenger side of Bellman’s vehicle. Both vehicles came to a rest in the roadway. Bellman’s vehicle sustained moderate damage to the passenger side. Felderman’s truck appeared to not have any damage, however there was possible damage to the snow plow and plow mounts. Both vehicles were driven from the scene. Both Bellman and Felderman were wearing seatbelts. Felderman received a minor laceration as a result of the crash but denied needing EMS.

On December 31, 2023 at approximately 7:41am the Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a hit and run crash located on East
St near Tower St in the Village of Tennyson. An unknown vehicle was traveling northbound on East St sometime during the prior evening hours. The vehicle left the roadway on the left side of the road and struck the mailbox at 187 East St. breaking the post off at the ground and destroying the box. It was apparent from the vehicle tracks in the snow that the vehicle continued into the yard at 185 East St, out that driveway, and then northbound onto East St again. This crash was not reported by the offending vehicle. Residents in the area noticed the crash when daylight hours approached. This matter is still under investigation. If anyone has any information regarding this incident they are asked to notify the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.
